Beth woke before it had started to get light, and felt the familiar desperate thirst and dull, aching head. Putting on her bedside light, she reached for her water and became aware of movement beside her.

‘God , Beth, too bright!’ S he jumped, looking round and yelping, almost bumping heads with Rick who was sitting up, rubbing his eyes.

‘Oh my G od , Rick!’

‘Morning , mate , ’ he grinned , in his usual phlegmatic way, ‘well, oops, I guess we had too much to drink again .’

Beth pulled the duvet up round her naked shoulders.

‘You do remember, don’t you?’ s he asked , because she didn’t , and hoped to bluff her way to pretending she did. This was another level to finding Rick on her sofa.

‘Course I do, I walked you home and then you invited me in and then … ’

‘Yeah,’ Beth cut him off, ‘that’s ok ay I remember now, bit of a blur though , but … shit , Rick! ’ She put her face in her hands.

‘Not to worry.’

‘Not to worry?!’

‘It wasn’t my plan , you know?’

‘What was your plan? ’

‘No plan, I was going to apologise for before, clear things up between us.’

‘Well, I guess that’s one way of doing it.’

‘I guess so.’

They stopped talking and Rick fell back on the pillows and let out a huge sigh. ‘Sorry , Beth, I blame the B lue V omit.’ Then he snorted some sort of snore and turned on his side away from her.

There was no way she could get back to sleep, so she switched off the lamp and crept out the room. She had to stop doing this – she didn’t know where it would take her. She was friends with Claire , for C hris t ’ s sake . She was more Rick’s friend but she did meet Claire for the occasional coffee too. Would they tell Claire? Could she ever look Claire in the eyes again?

She lifted the laptop from next to her on the sofa and put it on her knees. Switching it on, she logged into nostrings . She had two messages in her inbox but forced herself not to read them as she tried to find out how to leave the site . They didn’t signpost that information but, after search ing a while, she eventually found it in the help section and follow ed the instructions to remove her profile.

Finally, they let her go.

Your profile has been removed. She closed the laptop down and sat back in her seat, resting her head on the cushions. No more nostrings , no more B lue V omit. She closed her eyes, slightly pleased with her resolve. No more random sex? No more wine? She didn’t answer her own questions.
